Guitar product pages.

A preliminary read of product pages from a large online musical-instrument retailer — where the page says one thing about paying over time and its source says another. One of a set of anonymized EKOM analyses — what surfaced, and where it leads.

Lead finding  ·  a hidden payment no product could carry
On both pages, the source carries a four-figure monthly payment over 48 months, hidden from view.
The block is marked hidden and the page's own script later replaces it with the real offer, a low monthly payment over 36 months. A shopper never sees it. A crawler or a shopping assistant that reads the source without running the page is told a guitar costing a few hundred dollars costs four figures a month. The text is identical on two products at different prices, which points to a placeholder value.

A price search engines cannot read
Both pages publish the price in their product data under a capitalized key. Schema.org keys are case-sensitive, so a reader following the standard finds no price and no availability. No SKU and no barcode on either page.
Context: terms follow the brand
On the listing page, two dearer products from one brand show a 6-month term and two cheaper ones from another show 36 months. Every payment checks out arithmetically, so this is a promotion rule to confirm, not an error.

How EKOM read it. EKOM opened two product pages and one listing page in an ordinary browser, and read the visible page, the page source and the structured data inside it. Nothing was supplied. It then checked the words on the page against the source and the data behind them, and each listed payment against its price. It is two pages: every share is a share of those two, and whether the findings repeat across the catalog is an inference to confirm.

From diagnosis to channel-ready. The two findings may collapse into two upstream sources of wrong data — a placeholder value in the financing data that ships in the source, and product data written to a pattern and not checked against the standard. Fixing the findings fixes the findings; at catalog scale the harder part is finding every page that carries the same wrong value. Then the same intelligence holds the line at intake.
